A CLOSER LOOK AT PURDUE'S PROBABLE LINEUP
- Redshirt freshman Aaron Assad (125) and redshirt sophomore Tyler Kral (285) will wrestle in their first career dual for the Boilermakers. Both Assad and Kral fill weights that lost the 2013-14 starter to graduation, Camden Eppert (125) and Alex White (285).
- In 2013-14, Patrick Kissel started at 174 pounds in 11 of the 14 duals, but he has moved up to 184 for his final season. The starting role could fall upon redshirt junior Chad Welch, who has also moved up a weight class in 2014-15, or redshirt freshman Jacob Morrissey. Welch was a NCAA qualifier at 174 as a redshirt freshman in 2013.
- Danny Sabatello, a NCAA qualifier at 141 pounds, has moved down to 133 for his redshirt junior season. He posted an 11-8 record as a redshirt freshman wrestling at 133. The starting role is being contested by redshirt sophomore Kyle Ayersman, who posted a 15-10 record while making four dual appearances during his first season.
- During his rookie campaign, Alex Griffin split time between 149 and 157, assuming the starting role at 157 in January after Doug Welch suffered a season-ending injury. Griffin is back at 149 challenging 2013 NCAA qualifier Brandon Nelsen for the starting role. Welch, who last wrestled in a dual on Dec. 15, 2013, is also back in the lineup at 157.
- Nick Lawrence is back in the lineup for the first time since wrestling at the Franklin & Marshall Duals on Feb. 23, 2013, where he posted a 4-2 decision over Andrew Murano at 149 pounds.
- Nine of the 12 probables appeared in at least one dual for Purdue last season, combining for a 42-38 (.525) record. Double-digit wins were compiled by Sabatello (10-4) and Atwood (11-3) in 2013-14. When the dual career records are tallied for 10 of the 12 probables, they combine for a 139-97 (.589) mark.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
- Cal Poly has dropped its first two duals of the season, both of which were to NCAA Division II opponents, Cal Baptist (18-15) and San Francisco State (24-9). Against Cal Baptist, the Mustangs won four weights: 133, 141 and 174 via decision and Colt Shorts won by fall at 157. Cal Poly needed extra time to win three weights (165, 174, 285) in its dual with San Francisco State. Despite losing a dozen bouts, the Mustangs did not surrender any bonus points.
- Shorts finished as the 157-pound runner-up at the season-opening Clarion Open (11/2). That same day wrestling at the San Francisco State Under-21 Open, Travis Berridge placed first at 165 with a 4-0 record, posting a pair of decisions, a technical fall and a pin. Nick Johnson took third at 285.
- Senior 174-pounder Dominic Kastl heads Cal Poly's lineup. He opened his senior season with a pair of decisions in duals against Cal Baptist and San Francisco State and sports a 45-15 career record. Kastl was the Pac-12 champion at 165 pounds in 2012.
