Mulabegovic, who has missed most of the outdoor season due to injury, broke his own school record in the shot put, with a first-place launch of 19.49 meters (63 feet, 11 1/2 inches). His previous best was 19.28m, which he recorded on March 16, 2002. Mulabegovic's win also snapped teammate Scott Hecht's winning streak in the shot put. Hecht had won every shot competition entering Saturday's dual, but couldn't get past his teammate for the top spot and wound up settling for second place, reaching a distance of 17.98m (59-00).
The throwing corps continued its successful run in the discus, where Mulabegovic, Keith McBride and Scott Hecht all registered NCAA Regional Championship marks. Mulabegovic won the competition, with a mark of 53.76m (176-04); McBride copped the No. 2 spot at 52.96m (173-09) and Hecht came in fourth with a mark of 52.00m (170-07).
Purdue's throwers also scored on efforts from Brian Smith in the Javelin (63.34m, 207-10), and Igor Kirin (62.32m, 204-05)and John Paul Smolenski (61.44m, 204-05) in the hammer throw. Indiana's Adam Judge set a new field record in the hammer with his first-place launch of 67.55m (221-07). The previous record of 65.06m, was set two seasons ago by Purdue's Chris Brown.
Reeves' and Stovall's times in the 100-meter dash both eclipsed the previous standard of 10.49 seconds that was set in 1972 by former Boilermaker Larry Burton. Reeves came across the finish line first in 10.40 seconds, and Stovall was close behind at 10.45. Reeves' time tied his career best, which is fourth all-time at Purdue; Stovall's mark tied him for fifth on the all-time list with Boilermaker great Rod Woodson.
In addition to setting that record breaking performance, Stovall also captured the top spot in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing in 14.06 seconds. Reeves picked up his second win of the day in the 200, coming across in 20.97. Both of their winning marks qualified them for NCAA regionals.
Also winning for the Boilermakers Saturday were Pooh Williams in the pole vault (5.10m, 16-8 3/4), Derek Watkins in the high jump (2.12m, 6-11 1/2) and David Rae in the men's 3,000 steeplechase (9:12.53).
Jamar Green earned the silver medal in both the long jump and the 200. Green finished runner-up to Indiana's Aarik Wilson, with a leap of 7.54m (24-9) and later placed behind teammate Reeves clocking in at 21.18 seconds. Although Green's marks didn't enable him to win, they both qualified him for a spot at NCAA regionals.
Purdue's next meet is on Friday, May 9 for the Illinois Twilight Meet in Champaign, Ill. On Saturday, May 10, the Boilermakers head south to Bloomington, Ind., for the Billy Hayes Invitational.
