Men's Swimming Completes Purdue Sweep Over Miami (Ohio) On The Road

OXFORD, OHIO - The Purdue men's swim team completed the second half of the Boilermaker sweep over the Redhawks of Miami (Ohio) Friday, Nov. 3 with a score of 182-118. Purdue now stands at 1-0 on the year.

"This was a really good race for us," Purdue men's head swim coach Dan Ross said. "Early on it was a little rough, but we were able to pull things together and is was a good competition. Our relays were very well executed today and we're excited about hosting Evansville tomorrow."

In the first event of the day, the 200 medley relays proved well for the Boilermakers with two teams finishing first and second and a third finishing in the fourth spot. The first place team for Purdue consisted of junior Jon Duncan, sophomores Juan Rodela and Tad Sayce and freshmen Tamas Bessenyei. They finished with a time of 1:33.34. The second place team was made up of seniors Mike Miller, John Wakefield, and David Weis, and junior Donovan Crowley, finishing at 1:34.50. The fourth place team included seniors Ian Caswell and Matt Garrison, sophomore Gui Rego, and freshmen Iah Lehman, finishing with a time of 1:37.21.

In the 1000 freestyle, sophomore Jeremy Wright finished second with a time of 9:35.37, freshman Kyle Jackson finished third at 9:36.91 and freshman Tom Drejer finished fourth with 9:39.32.

The 200 freestyle also had three Boilermakers in the top four with sophoore Ehud Dekter finished second at 1:42.70, sophomore Will Seelbach finishing third with a time of 1:44.60 and Duncan finishing fourth with 1:44.

Wakefield finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.70, while Sayce and Caswell followed him in for third and fourth place finishes at 53.44 and 53.47, respectively.

The 100 breaststroke was readily taken by Purdue, with Bessenyei, Miller, and Rego finishing 1,2 and 3. Bessenyei's impressive first-place time was a new Boilermaker top time for the season at 56.72. Miller's 58.79 and Rego's 59.50 were also good enough for the second and third place spots on that record list.

Lehman was able to take third place in the 200 butterfly at 1:58.09 for the Old Gold and Black, with freshman Nick Cenci taking fourth place at 1:58.47.

In the 50 free, Weis and Wright were the top Purdue finishers with first and third spots, respectively. Weis finished with a 21.02 with Wright tallied a 21.78.

The 100 free was also a first and third finish for the Boilermakers with Duncan taking first at 46.43 and Seelbach finishing third with a time of 48.59.

In the 200 backstroke, Purdue again swept the first three finishes. Rodela finished first with a time of 1:51.67, Jackson took the second at 1:55.41 and Caswell the third with 1:56.65.

The 200 breaststroke time of Rego at 2:07.04 was fast enough to place him second on the 2000-01 top times list. Sayce finished second at 2:07.34 for a third place spot on the top times. Freshman Tony Ten Haagen also finished fourth with a time of 2:12.84.

Wright took another first place finish for Purdue at 4:37.78 in the 500 freestyle. Drejer finished third for a time of 4:43.98.

Bessenyei, with a time of 51.49, took a first place finish in the 100 butterfly. Garrison and Wakefield finished in the fourth and fifth spots, with times of 52.54 and 52.75, respectively.

In the 200 individual medley, Sayce finished first with a time of 1:53.48, also good enough to place himself at the top of the leader board for the event. Drejer finished fourth at 1:59.00 while Ten Haagen finished fifth with a 2:00.09 time.

In the last event of the evening, Purdue came out on top, one last time, for a first place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Duncan, Weis, Dekter, and Wright finished with a time of 1:24.83. The team of Rodela, Crowley, Caswell, and Seelbach finished third at 1:28.50.

In the diving events, junior Kevin Young finished second on the one meter board with a score of 221.32 and on the three meter board, freshman John Haglund had his best college meet with a second place finish and a score of 233.62.

The Boilermakers will return to action when they host the Evansville Purple Aces on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m.
