EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Highlighted by victories in four events, the Purdue swim teams both posted a split in the dual-meet scoring results at the season-opening Michigan State Outdoor Invitational on Friday afternoon.
The Purdue men and women were both victorious against the host Spartans but came up on the short end of the team scoring vs. Michigan. The men grinded out a 128-114 win vs. MSU despite not having many of their top returnees available due to disciplinary reasons.
Marat Amaltdinov swept the men's breaststroke events to lead the way. He established new pool records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at MSU's IM Sports West outdoor facility. All events were contested as long course with 50-meter lengths of the pool Friday.
For the women, Meagan Lim won the 100 butterfly and Kaersten Meitz was victorious in the 200 freestyle with a pool-record time. Meitz was also the runner-up in the 800 free and anchored the 400 free relay team to a second-place finish.
Annie Spalding opened her sophomore campaign by placing second in both breaststroke events. Freshman Haley Rowley (200 back and 200 fly) joined Meitz and Spalding as those to be the team's top finisher in multiple individual events. Fellow freshman Emily Meckstroth took third in both of her distance freestyle events.
For the Purdue men, Danny Conway was the team's top finisher in the 200 individual medley and 200 fly. Freshman Jackson Higgins did likewise in the 200 and 400 free.
The Boilermakers are back in action the weekend of Oct. 16-17 when they both have two meets on the schedule. The full women's team along with the men's divers will travel to Oxford, Ohio, on Oct. 16 for a dual meet at Miami. The men will host an intrasquad meet the same night. The annual Indiana Intercollegiates on Oct. 17 is the first co-ed home meet of the new season at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
